All of these things may – in some cases they apparently do not – result in correction of the basic problem by forcing the correct selection of the default device. I no longer have the ability to use the modem or maybe it would work if I troubleshot a little further but since it has been years since I used knspiron modem I didn’t bother trying. Or respond to Media Player sound features.

The first step, ALWAYS, is to check and make sure that the right sound device is selected as default in audio device setup. So essentially, if you are troubleshooting Audio issues and all basic troubleshooting fails, try removing the Modem drivers and see if that helps! After much searching online, I found an article about Windows XP stating that the biggest conflict with the audio drivers is often the Modem drivers. But that seems a lot of trouble to go through, just to change the default device from the modem – or some other obsoleted and redundant device – back to the device which should be handling sound on the machine.



No sound or audio in Inspiron Windows XP. I then uninstalled and deleted the ‘SigmaTel HD Audio’ drivers and then downloaded the latest drivers again from Dell. I did exactly inspiroon you said and my audio returned as soon as I had deleted the modem driver. Your fix worked great. Start menu, then click: Hey I’m having the exact same problem, the audio icon has a red circle with a white x in it and says “no audio input device is installed” i have a dell laptop and i had no problems with the aduio till a few days ago when my compter had some problems 6640m i reloaded windows vista home premium 32bit and ever since the aduio hasn’t worked.


In other Win OS setups reboot may be required. The only change with my problem is that it wasn’t the modem that I had to uninstall. Advertisements or commercial links.


Up to Windows Inspion this was called “disable in current hardware profile”. I have a new Inspiron and am still having this same issue.

I was haveing issues with my soune “no audio output device is installed” so after reading a lot of solutions to the issue i tried the one you suggested and bammm it worked this is how I did it step by step: Disabling the modem and inspjron new drivers seems to have repaired the problem.

Next attempt was to uninstall and delete the driver completely from my computer and then download the latest driver from Dell. Unfortunately advice given for this situation is often misdirected.
